Caustic Love

Paolo Nutini - Caustic Love

The wait of almost five years for something new by the Italian-Scotsman has most definitely been worth it.
Nutini takes a step away from his guitar and dances into the soul-funk genre with tracks like album opener and lead single Scream (Funk My Life Up) and Let Me Down Easy which samples Betty LaVette’s 1960s classic Motown track. Another interesting sample is on Iron Sky, featuring snippets from Charlie Chaplin’s famous final speech from The Great Dictator. He does provide more typical Nutiniesque music with tracks like Numpty, and romantic offerings including Better Man and the stripped-back Someone Like You.

X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary also introduces upcoming bands in live performances on his BBC Radio 2 show, The Saturday Sessions.
The fourth album from this series features tracks from Keane, the Manic Street Preachers and Primal Scream. Like every good compilation, the album includes a mixture of feel-good tracks such as Biffy Clyro’s version of the Daft Punk hit Get Lucky and more melodic offerings from Ben Howard and Lissie.
Expect a few surprises too; Turin Brakes take a very sinister spin on a Mary Poppins classic.

A Perfect Contradiction

Paloma Faith - A Perfect Contradiction.
Published by Press Association

Red-headed songstress Paloma Faith returns with her third album A Perfect Contradiction. She takes a fresh funk-soul vibe, most likely down to the influence collaborator Pharrell Williams had on Can’t Rely On You. Tracks Mouth To Mouth and Impossible Heart are reminiscent of classic disco, but the album also includes some Paloma-style classic sounds, such as Only Love Can Hurt Like This.

Taste My Own Tears is one of the stand-out tracks, featuring a sample of Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come. And she tempts Ben Drew’s Plan B back into soul with Other Woman.
